My Bio

 

My name is Girimbabazi Fabrice.

I am Rwandan.

I was born in 1993 in

Kibuye, Western province . 1994 my parents died in the Genocide of the Tutsi. After that I was taken to the orphanage "Orphelinat noel de Nyundo". There I grew up with more than 600 children. I studied primary at "Sanzare School" and made my A Level at "RAV Bigogwe".

 

In orphanage I started having the dream of being a painter. I felt the need to express the (mostly negative) emotions I had about a kid without parents. There was one woman who we orphans used to call "Mother". She was my mother. But apart from me she was a mother for more than 600 Kids.

 

I have been raised by females. The fact that I was never in touch with a male responsable influenced my art which I did not realize for a long time.

 

In 2012 I went to Art school "École d'Art de Nyundo".

 where I studied Graphic Art and Design for 3 years. In 2014 I got my Art diploma.

 

Shortly after the Government closed all orphanages in Rwanda.

In 2014 I continued my professional career as an artist in Kigali.

 

My first exhibition took place in the USA. My paintings were hanging together with some original Picasso paintingswhere I sold two of my paintings in Andrew Weiss Gallery.

 

In that time the Style of my paintings was always based on the same story: A mother and her child. In that time I did not now where the need to paint women/mothers and their babies again and again. Within the last years I finally came to the conclusion that this is my way of reflecting what happened to me as a kid, how I grew up and the roles that women and men played in my life. It is a cure.

 

My wish is to spread my art to people, to inspire them, bring them comfort, strength and maybe even bring them cure.
